Can Tho University (CTU) was founded in 1966 and is a multidisciplinary university and one of 12 score universities in Vietnam. The main missions of CTU are providing training programs for all levels including bachelor, master and doctor; conducting researches and transferring technology to serve the Mekong delta economic development. After 40 years of development, CTU has been recognized as one of leading universities in Vietnam, especially in the fields of agriculture and aquaculture/fisheries. CTU has 10 schools and colleges, over 1,500 teaching and supporting staff members and 30,000 students.
The College of Aquaculture and Fisheries (CAF) is one of 10 schools/colleges of CTU and was found in 1976. It has 45 permanent staff and 65 project based staff (of which 19 hold PhD and 20 are following PhD programs), and has been involved in education, research and technology transfer to serve the development of aquaculture and fisheries, especially for the Southern part of Vietnam. CAF’s research has been focusing on reproduction, nutrition, physiology, diseases, farming practices of high economical value species, especially indigenous species such as catfishes (Pangasius bocourti and Pangasianodon hypophthalmus), mud crab (Scylla spp.), marine shrimp (Penaeus monodon), and the giant freshwater prawn (Macrobrachium rosenbergii). CAF has just recently been up-grading its bio-technology, physiology, nutrition, pathology and food safety laboratories. During the last five years, CAF has conducted more than 70 different sized research projects, of which 15 have been internationally funded. CAF has implemented 5 INCO-DEV (EC) projects, of which 2 projects are completed, 2 projects now at completion phase and 1 project started.
Main tasks attributed: CU will involve in the all 12 work packages, and will be responsible for all related works to be conducted in Viet Nam.
Key Personnel
Associate Prof. Dr. Nguyen Thanh Phuong: is one of lead staff at CAF. He has been involved in education and research for over 20 years. His research has focused mainly on the fields of crustacean seed production and farming systems and aquatic animal nutrition. He has been leading a number of national and international research projects; during the past 5 years, he has focused his research on seed production and the culture of the tiger shrimp (Penaeus monodon) and the giant freshwater prawn (Macrobrachium rosenbergii) and catfish nutrition and feeds. He has considerable experience in leading international research projects.
Mr. Vo Nam Son: lecturer. Msc. Thesis relating to river pen culture of giant freshwater prawn (Macrobrachium rosenbergii) in Mekong delta of Vietnam. Dissertation of pH.D., Development of suitable cropping calendards for tiger shrimp culture in Mekong delta taking environmental and climatic factors in to account. Project, WES, JIRCAS.
Mr. Dao Minh Hai obtained BSc. degree in Aquaculture (CAF – CTU). He is expert on culture and seed production of Seabass ( Lates calcarifer). He has high skill in working with the Climate Change project on the catfish and shrimp culture.
Dr. Truong Hoang Minh is an aquaculture specialist with 15 years of experience in aquaculture and aquatic resources management, especially in integrated coastal zone management (ICZM) and 3 years of research experience in climate change impacts on aquaculture. His obtained degrees are BSc in Aquaculture from Can Tho University in 1996, MSc in Aquaculture and Aquatic Resources Management from Asian Institute of Technology (AIT), Thailand in 2001 and PhD in Integrated Tropical Coastal Zone Management (ITCZM) from AIT, Thailand in 2009.Mr. Tran Minh Phu: Vietnamese Pangasius AIPs coordinator, has BSc in Aquaculture from Can Tho University and MSc in Sustainable Coastal Development, Aquaculture from Norwegian University of Science and Technology. He has experience on Pangasius catfish farming both in nutrition and chemical contaminations. From 2004, Phu worked in Can Tho University as a researcher with several projects funded by Australian Center for International Agricultural Research (ACIAR), Belgian and Vietnamese governments, and SFP.
Mr. Nguyen The Dien graduated BSc. degree in Aquaculture (CAF – CTU). He has a practical experience about survey from local and international projects.
Mr. Phan Thanh Lam: Obtained MSc degree at International Fisheries Management in the University of Tromso in 2006. Mr. Thanh has experience in field of aquaculture socio-economic analysis and fisheries assessment. Besides, he is a key national officer of project “Development of Better Management Practices (BMPs) for Catfish farming in the Mekong Delta” funded by Australian Government (2008-2010), and project “Better Management Practices (BMPs) for intensive shrimp farming in the Mekong Delta” funded by Oost Vlaanderen province/Belgium (2008-2010).
